Abstract

The aim of the article is to systematise the variety of forms of hairstyles by V. Sassoon, to identify the main author's formative techniques and means. Methodology: analysis, synthesis and analogy methods and figurative, stylistic and formal analysis methods have been used to achieve the set goals of the study. Results. The article considers the creative heritage of the outstanding British hairstyle designer Vidal Sassoon. The main focus of the study is on the hairstyle formation analysis. Such formative author's principles as geometry, correlation with the anatomical structure of the face; inspiration sources – Bauhaus architecture and other examples of modernism; expression compositional means – asymmetry, oblique lines, diagonals, angles; philosophy and care method – ‘wash and wear’, selfstyling, have been analysed based on the most characteristic hairstyle samples of the 1960s by W. Sassoon. The five-point bob, symmetrical and asymmetrical bob of short and medium length, symmetrical and asymmetrical lob of short and medium length, pixie and Goddess haircuts have been highlighted in the study as the most characteristic hairstyles by V. Sassoon. The scientific novelty. The work of the British hairstyle designer Vidal Sassoon and the artistic approaches to formation that allowed the master to embody the idea of hairstyle similarities with the geometric forms of Bauhaus architecture have been evaluated and examined for the first time in art history research on design. Practical significance. The research materials can be used in lecturing courses on the history of hairdressing and design. The legacy of V. Sassoon is a significant page in the hairdressing history and a powerful source of inspiration for contemporary practice in variable bob and lob haircuts creation.
