ETYMOLOGY AND CONCEPTUAL AND TERMINOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF THE TATTOO AS A TYPE OF GRAPHIC DESIGN

Abstract

The purpose of this publication is to systematize and generalize information about the emergence of the term tattoo and to define the conceptual and terminological aspects of the phenomenon itself as one of the types of graphic design. Methodology. The following research methods are used in the publication: the method of historical analysis and the historical-retrospective method, which provides the basis for creating a comprehensive analysis of this area of artistic creativity, namely, identifying its specificity, genre diversity, stylistic and compositional features, historical changes from the initial forms to modern ones on theoretical and methodological principles. Results. As a special type of art and type of graphic design, tattooing has existed since the time of primitiveness. In our time, it has combined the features of a traditional and at the same time innovative, design direction. The special role of tattoo art lies in its reflection of a general and personal worldview, philosophical, political, aesthetic thought. Modern art is looking for new forms and solutions, specifically those that are created by means of design. In the process of research, the meaning of such concepts as “tattoo” and “design”, “art”, “art practice” was generalized. The concept of “tattoo” was generalized in the definition as the act of applying a stable pattern to the human body, which is carried out by the method of local traumatization of the skin with the introduction of a coloring pigment into the subcutaneous tissue-dermis. The study and analysis of the terminological and conceptual apparatus belonging to the sphere of tattoo art indicate its compliance with the scientific ideas developed in art history, but at the same time provide an opportunity to adjust them in accordance with the format of research into tattoo art as a branch of design practices. Scientific novelty. Based on the analysis, information on the origin of the term tattoo was systematized and conceptual and terminological aspects of the phenomenon of tattooing as a type of graphic design were determined. Practical relevance. The results of the research can be used in setting and solving practical tasks in the field of artistic tattooing during the professional training of tattoo artists, modern graphic designers and fashion stylists in the system of higher design education.
