Abstract

The author analyzed the theoretical foundations and practical aspects of implementing an environmental management system in tourism. The role of environmental management as a strategic tool for reducing anthropogenic load on the natural environment and increasing the level of environmental safety of tourist regions was determined. International environmental management standards, in particular ISO 14001, Green Key, EU EcoLabel, and their role in forming an environmentally responsible tourism business were studied. It was established that environmental certification, environmental audit, use of renewable energy sources and integration of environmental management into state policy are key factors for sustainable development of the tourism industry. Based on the analysis of world experience, the main prospects for implementing environmental management in Ukraine were identified. The need to develop state programs for environmental auditing of tourist facilities, optimizing the use of natural resources, expanding environmental certification and introducing educational initiatives aimed at improving the environmental culture of tourists and market operators was substantiated. Recommendations are proposed for improving the environmental management system in the context of integrating the principles of sustainable development into the tourism sector.
