THE CONCEPT OF “CHILD” IN THE LITERATURE OF AMERICAN ROMANTICISM: PECULIARITIES OF ACADEMIC PERCEPTION

Abstract

The article is an attempt of systematizing approaches to the problem of the concept of “child” representation in American fiction. The two basic vectors of academic research are under consideration: investigating the child’s image as a philosophical construct with the aim of getting  information about national mentality; and identifying the influence of fictional images on young recipients.  In the context of the first approach we outline the main tendencies of the revision of the romantic conception of “child” / “childhood” by modern literary criticism. In the context of the second we accentuate the necessity of taking into account child-oriented discourse data when analyzing the concept of “child”.
