NATIONAL SELF-DEFINITION IN THE ART WORKS OF W. KURELEK: NON-CONFORMIST CONNOTATIONS

The article presents the problem of national self-determination (identity) in the work of William Kurelek (1927-1977), a Canadian artist of Ukrainian descent and the grandson of Bukovinian immigrant pioneers. The personal national self-determination of the artist in Canadian society and in particular in the Ukrainian community is analyzed. The concept of nonconformism is also described as the artist's willingness to defend his personal intellectual, spiritual and deeply national viewpoint imbued with the philosophy of religion and the essence of being. This is contrary to the dominant view in a multicultural Canada. Through an analysis of paintings. the influence of the artist's nonconformist ideas on his thematic-conceptual canvas has been demonstrated.
