The issue of anti-scuffing action of individual hydrocarbons (HCs) in petroleum oils under the operating conditions of gear transmissions is considered. It is shown that the anti-scuffing effect of individual HCs is determined by the intensity of organic film (OF) formation on friction surfaces within a temperature range from the melting points of the hydrocarbons (HCs) to the temperature at which OF formation ceases, passing through a maximum at the point of maximum OF formation intensity.
