Abstract

Purpose: to study the stereotypical image of a lawyer formed by first year law students as a prerequisite for professional development of personality and factors influencing this process. Methods: questionnaire (a specially designed questionnaire was used as a tool, which included questions selected by the authors of the methodology based on the analysis of studies in the field of legal psychology, and which determine the key characteristics (personal qualities) of the lawyer); factor and variance analysis. Results: it is shown that as a form of individual consciousness of high school graduates’ stereotypes fulfill a social-regulating function, act as an important component of the system of factors influencing the formation of goals for determining the direction of further vocational education and motivation for admission to the relevant institution of higher education. Average rank values, variance, and standard deviations of the mean distribution were calculated for each matrix. The hypothesis of the study was confirmed, which is that the system of characteristics of a specialist in the field of justice, which is formed from students of the first year of law school, depends on the gender of the student. It is substantiated that the primary images-stereotypes of the lawyer formed by the first-year students have clearly expressed gender characteristics that should be taken into account in the further purposeful formation of the image of the lawyer-professional. It was found out that it is worthwhile to avoid negative gender stereotypes, evaluative judgements in the process of evaluating students, focus one’s attention at complementary roles of men and women in life and social situations, equal opportunities for personality and professional development and promotion. It was concluded that educational process in a modern legal educational body should take place considering gender peculiarities of the youth; it can ensure innovative nature and personality orientation as a condition for teaching a well-qualified specialist and a development of a creative and harmonious personality. Discussion: the results of the analysis of the influence of the factors identified in the study on the formation of first-year law students stereotypes of the lawyer is an important condition for specifying pedagogical measures to develop the professional orientation of future lawyers.
