It explores how designers balance tradition and innovation, develop diverse typologies, adopt new materials and technologies, and embed cultural meaning into their works. The goal is to understand how these practices shape a distinctive global identity rooted in Chinese heritage. Methodology. Adopting a qualitative approach, this research combines literature review, visual content analysis, case studies, and regional comparison. It analyzes representative works by Chinese designers, focusing on materials, themes, techniques, and symbolic expression. Results. The findings show that contemporary Chinese jewelry design is characterized by multi-dimensional creativity expressed through narrative-driven themes, hybrid aesthetic languages, and typological expansion. Designers merge classical Chinese symbols, such as dragons, gourds, ruyi locks, and lotus flowers, with contemporary minimalism and global design vocabularies. Technical innovations, including the use of titanium, 3D printing, and new gemstone-setting techniques, have redefined the structural possibilities of jewelry. Symbolism plays a central role in design expression, and many works embed emotional, philosophical, or mythological content rooted in Chinese traditions. Moreover, designers across regions demonstrate strong cross-disciplinary tendencies, often blurring boundaries between jewelry, sculpture, fashion, and body art. While Hong Kong designers emphasize refinement and East- West luxury fusion, and Taiwanese designers show poetic sensitivity and artisanal craft, Mainland Chinese designers lead in experimental expressions and assertive cultural representation. Despite regional distinctions, a converging design ethos has emerged, forming a recognizable Contemporary Chinese Jewelry Design identity. Scientific novelty. This article presents an in-depth, cross-regional synthesis of Chinese jewelry design. It integrates conceptual, material, and aesthetic perspectives into a coherent analytical framework, contributing to global design scholarship. Practical relevance. The findings offer guidance for designers, curators, and educators seeking to engage with Chinese jewelry design. The study emphasizes the role of heritage, sustainability, and cross-media practices in shaping creative outcomes. It identifies actionable trends such as new traditionalism and digital craft as future directions for both design education and industry innovation.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20481 THE DYNAMICS OF BANKNOTE DESIGN IN INDEPENDENT UKRAINE IN THE SOCIOCULTURAL DIMENSION 2025-11-04T15:15:30+02:00 Dmytro Hrynko dimagrinco@gmail.com
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20482 SOME ISSUES OF CLASSIFICATION OF INFOGRAPHIC DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT MODELS 2025-11-04T15:19:51+02:00 Igor Dudnyk ihor.dudnik@npp.kai.edu.ua Marina Kotsiubynska maryna.kotsiubynska@npp.kai.edu.ua
The purpose. The aim of the article is to systematize the specific forms of infographic presentation of information, identify appropriate and effective classification approaches, their conceptual coordination and form the foundations of a universal classification within the framework of information design. Methodology. The article uses an analytical method to study the nature of infographics as a means of visual presentation of information and its evolution in the context of modern information society. Comparative analysis is used to compare infographics with related forms of data visualization – such as illustration, graphic journalism, visual notes, etc. Descriptive and classification approaches are also used to generalize the types of infographics and outline their boundaries. Results. To outline the main specific groups of infographic presentation of information and identify relevant and effective classifications of infographics, the works of leading information design specialists were reviewed. The concepts of William Bowman, Edward Tufte and Isabel Meirelles were coordinated among themselves and selected as basic. The basis of the infographic classification of the higher hierarchy is proposed to take the systematization proposed by William Bowman: what: appearance, structure, organization; how: movement, system, process; how much: size, quantity and tendency, division; where: place, location, position. These data can be supplemented with the proposals of Isabel Meirelles: temporal structures, that is, infographics that answer the question when, and «synthetic structures», as such that combine several previous types. Scientific novelty. The article comprehensively reviews the classification groups of information modeling for the first time, and draws parallels between the concepts of different authors. The practical relevance of the study lies in the possibility of applying its results in the development and improvement of educational and professional training programs for specialists in the specialty «IT Design». The study outlines key vectors of digital information transformation, in particular the classification principles of infographic modeling, which can serve as a basis for creating methodological recommendations for organizing and conducting classroom classes in the mentioned specialty.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20483 KINETIC TYPOGRAPHY IN PROFESSIONAL AND USER CONTENT OF DIGITAL MEDIA 2025-11-04T15:24:03+02:00 Mykhailo Yenchev mihail.enchev1984@gmail.com
The purpose of the article is to identify the features of the formation and development of kinetic typography in the context of media evolution, as well as to conceptualize the practice of its use in modern digital media using the example of professional and user content. Methodology. The study uses the method of theoretical analysis; the typological method, thanks to which the main characteristics of kinetic typography were clarified; the historical and cultural method, the application of which is due to the importance of considering the formation of kinetic typography in historical retrospect; comparative analysis method, which contributed to the identification of the features of the use of kinetic typography in various types of visual content of digital media; method of art history and compositional analysis, etc. Results. According to the results of the study, it was found that kinetic typography can be considered as a representation of information using text in motion over a certain period of time, a form capable of conveying emotions through dynamic visualization of the text. Due to its ability, kinetic typography enhances the communicative properties of the text, itself becoming a catalyst for expressive power. Summarizing the theoretical materials presented in the scientific literature and based on the analysis of modern content of digital media, the following typology of kinetic typography can be proposed: by type of content (professional and user); by type of audiovisual forms (kinetic typography for feature films, television series, TV programs, trailers, spoilers, advertising videos, music videos, small screen forms of social media (short videos – Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, TikTok Story, etc.); by type of movement («sequential» or «serial presentation» and «dynamic presentation» (divided into global and local). Scientific novelty. For the first time, kinetic typography of professional and user content of digital media is considered from an art historical perspective. The author’s definition of the concept of «kinetic typography» and typology are proposed. Unknown and little-known art historical works of foreign researchers related to the issue of kinetic typography in new media are introduced into scientific circulation. Practical relevance. The results of the study of the process of development of kinetic typography in the context of media evolution and in modern stage, through the prism of the specifics of professional and user content of digital media can become the basis for further art-historical research of the indicated issues. Methodology. To fulfill the tasks set in the article, the tools of complex, chronological, historical, biographical, comparative methods are used, which makes it possible to look broadly at the analyzed phenomenon and analyze it at the junction of different branches of knowledge – aesthetics, cultural studies, art history, since it has a generally significant character and lies at the intersection of several scientific fields. Results. The artist from a small Ukrainian village, even today, sixty years after her death, is an imperfectly illuminated phenomenon of national culture, which requires not only a more detailed study, but also a rethinking, first of all, of the role of her heritage in the context of today’s challenges. The influence of the artist’s creativity on her artistic environment, the potential of her art works for many spheres of artistic life, including modern life, is emphasized. The tragic fate of the artist, who was dependent all her life on a number of factors that did not allow her talent to reveal itself in full force, is emphasized, and in the last years of her life her works were created far beyond the borders of the Motherland, which was the source of inspiration for her image-making. The dissonance between the nature of the purely national content of the artist’s creative manner and the conditions in which she created a significant part of her life, far beyond the borders of Ukraine, is highlighted. The scientific novelty of the stated maxims is seen primarily in a different, relevant in the light of modern realities, point of view, which is proposed for rethinking the role, the significance of the creative legacy of Hanna Sobachko-Shostak for modern Ukrainians. This gives prospects for further scientific research. Tasks for future explorations in this area are outlined. The practical relevance of the research is embodied primarily in the great potential of the material if it is implemented in special courses not only for future art historians, but also as a segment of the education of designers, textile specialists, ceramics, and decorators, as well as a basis for large-scale interdisciplinary exhibition projects.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20485 WEB DESIGN OF THE FUTURE: BALANCING TECHNOLOGY, ETHICS, AND USER EXPERIENCE 2025-11-04T15:31:07+02:00 Nina Ivanova n.vergunova@gmail.com Nataliia Vergunova n.vergunova@gmail.com Andrii Yesipov esipov1995@gmail.com
The article presents a comprehensive analysis of web design as a unique visual language of the digital age. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of colour in the visual image design of cities in Shandong Province based on the analysis of regional characteristics. Methodology. The study is based on the analysis of collected representative graphic materials from selected cities in Shandong Province using the visual sampling method, which allowed obtaining real visual information about the city. The manual colour extraction method is used to extract the dominant colour in the selected image material from a colour recognition website, record its HEX CODE and name it. Finally, the ‘The main theme’ colours of 10 cities in Shandong Province were extracted using colour analysis. Based on their art historical analysis, which includes an analysis of colour trends, cultural background, and urban development orientation, their spatial colour characteristics and visual images were highlighted to form a system of colour representation with narrativity and locality. Results. The study of urban colour characteristics based on regional aspects demonstrates the diversity of urban colours in Shandong Province and explains the importance of colour in urban development. The colour types of cities in Shandong Province are classified and four categories of urban colour system are distinguished: Coastal freshness, Ecologically wilderness type, Cultural warmth type and Comprehensive type. Each type also presents colour structure and visual characteristics that are closely related to the natural geography and cultural background of the local urban area. The results of the study indicate that regional environment and urban characteristics are inextricably linked in the urban colour system. Scientific novelty. Based on regional aspects, the study proposes for the first time a method for classifying the visual image of urban colours based on geographical environment, history and humanities, and urban functions. Compared with previous studies focusing on the colour of individual urban regions, considerable attention is paid to the visual correlation between the colour structure and the overall unity of urban space, which highlights the aesthetic value and systematic role of the urban colour system. Practical relevance. The research results provide a clear classification basis and methodological support for the design of urban visual image and related urban colour research. The proposed classification of urban colour systems can provide designers with effective design guidelines for their visual practice in different cities. In addition, the research contributes to the formation of a more holistic visual space of the city, the enhancement of public identity, and the enhancement of regional content communication to create a more accurate and vivid image of the city.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20490 SYMBOLS AS A LIFE-AFFIRMING FOUNDATION FOR VISUALISING UKRAINE’S CULTURAL MONUMENTS 2025-11-05T08:36:34+02:00 Oleksandr Lisovskyi alexander.lisovsky@gmail.com
The relevance of this research is dictated by the current circumstances of Russian hostile aggression, which deliberately seeks to erase the historical memory and national identity of Ukrainians. Purpose. To characterise the symbol as the basis for visualising two restored architectural monuments of Ukrainian culture – the Zaborovskyi Gate and the surviving monument to Hryhorii Skovoroda on the grounds of the damaged literary-memorial museum in the Kharkiv region (2022). Methodology. The methodology rests on a range of approaches, notably comparative analysis, source criticism and the synthesis of the results obtained. Results. Having overcome an act of destruction, the Hryhorii Skovoroda Literary-Memorial Museum now demonstrates the evolution of its identity in response to this challenge: from a local memorial space it has been transformed into a symbol of global significance – a symbol of the indestructibility of the Ukrainian spirit. Because symbols remain the dominant features of Ukrainian cultural monuments, we draw on the theses of Carl Gustav Jung’s analytical psychology, whose vitality endures. His definition of the symbol provides the foundation for our understanding of the term as a sign endowed with philosophical depth. The symbolism of the philosopher Hryhorii Skovoroda, one of the indispensable artistic hallmarks of the Baroque era, is re-examined. We propose incorporating a video sequence of the Ukrainian Baroque monument – the Zaborovskyi Gate in the enclosure of Saint Sophia Cathedral – into a three-dimensional environment, which will presumably trigger an insight in viewers. It would be advisable to add the caption: “Do you wish to understand Baroque architecture? Study the Zaborovskyi Gate!”, for it illustrates the significance of a longlasting, recognisable identity that becomes synonymous with national culture. Scientific novelty. The article improves the interpretation of the visual identification of cultural monuments of Ukraine as a complex design dimension of their image, which ensures recognition when physical objects are damaged. Practical relevance is to affirm the role of design as a tool for preserving cultural heritage in times of war, when physical objects can be destroyed or mutilated. The proposed approach to the visual identification of architectural monuments – in particular, the Zaborovsky Gate – in three-dimensional space contributes to their recognition, popularization, and rethinking in the context of modern challenges.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20491 VISUAL AND PLASTIC CODE OF UNIVERSITY IDENTITY: ACADEMIC GOWN. A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS 2025-11-05T08:40:41+02:00 Larisa Liutenko lutenkola@gmail.com Maryna Tokar mari4katokar@gmail.com
Purpose. The aim of this study is to explore the potential of the Ukrainian academic gown as a component of the visual identity of higher education institutions and to identify ways of reinterpreting and adapting it to contemporary cultural and value paradigms. This is achieved through a comparative analysis of academic dress (gowns) in countries that have experienced the impact of totalitarian and colonial regimes – namely, Ukraine and South Africa. Methodology. The research is based on a comparative analysis of the visual codes embedded in the academic dress of Ukrainian and South African higher education institutions. The study employs methods of visual analysis and color symbolism interpretation, as well as cultural and semiotic approaches to examining academic regalia as an element of institutional identity. Results. The study reveals that academic regalia in South African universities, while rooted in European tradition, have been adapted to local cultural codes. In the South African context, color carries significant semantic weight, closely tied to ethnic, historical, and social identity. Ukrainian universities, on the other hand, continue to adopt and replicate a European visual model of the academic gown that has remained largely unchanged since the totalitarian period. This tradition underscores the need to reconsider the symbolic function of academic dress as a part of the visual identity of higher education institutions. In this context, the incorporation of national symbols, traditional colors, and ornamental motifs becomes especially important in shaping a distinctive visual identity for Ukrainian academia and in emphasizing its cultural uniqueness. Scientific novelty. For the first time in Ukrainian academic discourse, a comparative analysis of academic dress is conducted within the framework of post-totalitarian reinterpretation of the visual culture of higher education. The study introduces the concept of ornamental and coloristic thinking as a tool for visually constructing institutional and national identity within Ukrainian higher education. Practical relevance. The findings can serve as both a theoretical and practical foundation for the design or redesign of academic dress for Ukrainian higher education institutions. This process should incorporate principles of national identity, cultural heritage, academic representation, and brand communication. The purpose of the article is to investigate the transformation of the role and methods of using the line as a material element of space in modernist and postmodernist art, to trace its transition from an instrument for outlining form to a dynamic medium that combines object, space and viewer. Methodology. The research is based on the principles of interdisciplinary and comprehensive approaches that combine the analysis of artistic phenomena and contemporary scientific concepts. Historical-chronological, biographical, historical-comparative methods and art analysis were used, as well as the interpretation of artistic practices in the context of theories of space and time. Results. Based on the analysis of works by Julio Gonzalez, Lijia Clark, Dan Flavin, David Smith, Eva Hesse, Gordon Matt Clark, Mona Hatoum, Jesus Rafael Soto, Tamara Kvesitadze and Joma Plensa, the key directions for rethinking the line in art in the mid-20th century and the first quarter of the 21st century are outlined. A comprehensive interpretation of the transformations of the line as a leading means of expression in the visual art of late modernism and postmodernism is proposed. A complex of aspects of the functioning of the material spatial line has been revealed, which, in addition to its visual form, acquires audio-tactile, kinetic prolongation and involvement as means of forming an interactive environment in contemporary artistic practices. Scientific novelty. The features of the artistic rethinking of the line as a spatial element capable of structuring the environment, interacting with the viewer and integrating different types of spatiality – physical, psychological and social – have been revealed. It has been proven that in the art of the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries, the line has become an instrument for modelling the interaction of object, space and time. It has been established that the line goes beyond the traditional contour of form and becomes an active element that structures space, influences its perception and creates an interactive dialogue with the viewer. Practical relevance. The results of the study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of postmodern art and can be used in educational programmes on art theory and history, in art history and interdisciplinary studies, as well as in the creative practice of artists and designers.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20493 COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF MILITARY CAMOUFLAGE PATTERNS (UNIFORMS) OF NATO MEMBER STATES 2025-11-05T08:56:06+02:00 Artem Parfylo artphotography@ukr.net Yuriy Nizovtsev nexp.yn@gmail.com
This article presents a comparative analysis of military camouflage equipment used by NATO member states in the context of contemporary security challenges and military effectiveness. The purpose of the article is to explore the concept of mono-composition as a means of artistic forming in interior design, to determine its aesthetic and functional capabilities, which can be used by a designer to identify and designate interior decoration. Methodology. The study uses the methods of visual and comparative analysis, iconographic and case study methods to determine the semantic context of art objects. Results. The results of the study show that in interior design, mono-compositional solutions contribute to the harmonisation of space, reduce visual tension, and enhance the emotional effect of the presence of an art object, especially when the latter combines utility, decorativeness, and conceptuality. It has been found that a monochrome mural, ceramic panel, stained-glass window, textile product in a public space can act as an interactive form of communication – visually invisible but conceptually expressive; identify and designate the typological and functional belonging of the space, in particular as an attractive, aesthetically and meaningfully decorative element of the decoration. Scientific novelty. The scientific novelty of the research lies in identifying the specifics of using monocomposition as a means of artistic form creation in interior art design. For the first time, the influence of monochrome solutions on the emotional perception of space in the context of the synthesis of decorative art and contemporary design practices has been analysed. An approach to interpreting monocomposition not only as an aesthetic category but also as a tool for creating expressive and symbolically charged art objects for public interiors is proposed. The patterns of interaction between monocompositional forms and the material and spatial environment are revealed, expanding the understanding of the potential of decorative textiles, murals and installations in interior design. The emphasis is on original designs as a unique opportunity to form a creative, individual design style. Practical relevance. The practical significance of the study lies in the possibility of applying theoretical provisions and conclusions in the activities of interior designers, decorative artists, architects, and art project curators. The purpose of this article is to conduct a theoretical analysis of the integration process between graphic and multimedia design in the digital age, with an emphasis on aesthetic and axiological principles of design. Methodology. Research methods include the analysis of scholarly literature to explore contemporary approaches to design, aesthetics, and axiology in the digital context; and the comparative-analytical method to identify similarities and differences in aesthetic and value-based approaches in design. Results. The analysis of current trends reveals that design is no longer one-dimensional. It now incorporates dynamics, narrative structures, interactivity, as well as consideration of sociocultural context, audience behavior patterns, and value orientations. In this regard, UX/UI technologies play a significant role by transforming aesthetic solutions into part of the functional experience, while visual elements serve as carriers of humanistic messages. Principles such as emotional resonance, minimalism, visual coherence, dynamic interaction, and contextuality constitute the foundation of a new holistic design approach. It is established that aesthetic components (color palette, typography, rhythm, animation) in a multimedia environment acquire an additional semantic layer. At the same time, the axiological potential of visual and multimedia design as a means of influencing social reality is revealed. The concept of integrating aesthetic and value-based principles into multimedia design has been formulated, allowing functionality, emotional expressiveness, and semantic richness to be combined within a single design product. The aim of the study is to identify the compositional features of the visual organisation of museum application interface elements in China. The identification of their aesthetic characteristics will provide a theoretical basis for future interface optimization. Methodology. This study employs systematic analysis, artistic analysis, and compositional analysis to conduct a multidimensional analysis of interface design. Systematic analysis focuses on the structural and functional relationships between various visual elements; artistic analysis explores the role of images, fonts, and colours in visual expression; and compositional analysis focuses on the impact of layout, visual hierarchy, and dynamic effects on user perception and interface experience. Results. This study systematically analyses the visual elements and compositional characteristics of the interface design of museum applications in China. The study finds that most interface designs integrate aesthetics, functionality, emotionality, and traditional Chinese cultural connotations into a compositional paradigm that conveys cultural arts and national aesthetics to users. This study focuses on four core visual elements: layout (emphasizes clear information hierarchy and spatial order); font design (highlights traditional art and readability); colour coordination (reflects traditional colours and modern vitality; icon design (prioritizes functional orientation and cultural symbol expression). Additionally, the integration of visual elements with animation effects enhances the interface’s interactivity and engagement, creating a dynamic visual experience that combines visual appeal with cultural immersion. The overall design embodies modularity, adaptability, and immersion, establishing a path for the deep integration of traditional cultural aesthetics with contemporary design expression. Scientific novelty. This study is the first to adopt a compositional analysis perspective, systematically integrating visual elements and aesthetic characteristics in interface design to explore their role in enhancing visual communication and cultural expression. Practice has proven that visual elements not only convey national culture and regional characteristics but also serve as important vehicles for cultural narrative and emotional resonance. Key components of restoring and implementing this experience in Ukraine include international assistance: attracting foreign investment in various formats, providing informational support, and fostering cooperation in science, technology, industry, and other areas. These considerations are also relevant to the restoration of air traffic service (ATS) facilities, particularly aerodrome control towers (hereinafter – ACTs). Purpose – to trace modern trends in the design and construction of ACT buildings in order to identify potential directions for the sustainable restoration of the air traffic service system. Methodology. The research is based on the following sources: − legislative and regulatory acts in the fields of aviation transport, construction, environmental protection, etc.; − design solutions and preliminary proposals for the construction of ATS facilities; − materials from international and regional competitions for designing such facilities; − existing analytical, graphical, and photographic materials; − academic literature. The following methods were used: source analysis; comparative and critical analysis; a systematic approach to studying the object as part of air traffic service facility complexes, spatial organization of airports, and surrounding influence zones. Results. A generalized review of decades of experience in designing and constructing control tower buildings (hereinafter – CTs) and ACTs throughout the second half of the 20th century is presented. The study highlights features of various stages in the 100-year history of CT building operation, as well as the evolution and development of their typology. The influence of airport development and surrounding zones on the emergence of a new type of ATS facility – the ACT – is outlined. Current trends in ACT construction are analyzed, particularly their role as vertical landmarks in the spatial structure of airports and nearby territories. Special attention is given to three ACT buildings that were either constructed or planned for construction by the Ukrainian State Enterprise “UkSATSE” (Ukrainian State Air Traffic Services Enterprise) at Ukrainian airports in the first quarter of the 21st century. The paper presents materials related to enhancing and updating relevant components of educational and professional programs for training specialists in the construction and operation of aviation infrastructure facilities. Scientific novelty. The study analyzes the reasons behind the unification of spatial-planning, structural, and engineering components in design solutions. It traces changes in the typology of ATS facilities and the growing urbanistic and architectural importance of such buildings in the context of airport development. To identify potential directions for the sustainable restoration of the national air traffic service system: − the domestic experience of constructing ACTs as part of building and facility complexes is examined, focusing on the specifics of their spatial compositions; − a retrospective analysis of global experience in involving leading infrastructure consulting firms, architectural bureaus, and construction corporations in the creation of ACTs is conducted – including both custom-designed (3) and standardized (1) projects. Practical relevance. The findings: − consolidate theoretical and practical experience in addressing the historical context of aviation infrastructure development, particularly during the post-war reconstruction of various countries; − are integrated into the educational process for training specialists in the fields of G17 «Architecture and Urban Planning», G18 «Geodesy and Land Management», and G19 «Construction and Civil Engineering» (at both the first and second educational qualification levels) at the State University «Kyiv Aviation Institute»; − demonstrate the effectiveness of initial efforts to enrich and update relevant educational and professional programs, taking into account the challenges of wartime and the prospects for post-war recovery.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20455 THE INFLUENCE OF ARCHITECTURAL FORM ON THE SOCIAL BEHAVIOR OF USERS 2025-11-04T11:19:34+02:00 Marian Andrukhiv marian.i.andrukhiv@ukd.edu.ua
Purpose. The purpose of the article is to theoretically substantiate the relationship between architectural form and users’ social behavior, with an emphasis on identifying the mechanisms through which spatial and formal characteristics of the built environment influence social interaction, behavioral patterns, levels of social activity, feelings of safety, and collective identity in urbanized space. Methodology. The research methodology is based on an interdisciplinary approach that combines theoretical-architectural analysis with methods of spatial sociology, neuroarchitecture, and urban studies. The study applies the principles of structural-functional analysis, spatial syntax, and comparative analysis of implemented projects to identify the correlation between architectural form and users’ social behavior. Results. The article demonstrates that architectural form is an active factor of social influence, capable of shaping user behavior, structuring communication, and affecting collective identity. Four key criteria of architectural impact are identified: spatial-behavioral, aesthetic-perceptual, socio-cultural, and functional-communicative, each determining specific modes of human-environment interaction. The study analyzes the role of circulation logic, zoning, aesthetic properties, and symbolic meaning in the formation of social practices. It also provides examples of architectural solutions that enhance social interaction, inclusion, and community cohesion. Scientific novelty. For the first time, a systematic typology of the effects of architectural form on users’ social behavior has been proposed within an interdisciplinary framework combining architectural theory with spatial sociology and neuroarchitecture. Practical relevance. The findings can be applied in the architectural design of public spaces to create socially responsive and inclusive environments.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20456 TRADITIONAL SOURCES OF UKRAINIAN IDENTITY IN THE ARCHITECTURAL WORKS OF VIKTOR K. Methodology. The research employs methods of source analysis and systematization, the study of archival and bibliographic materials, comparative analysis of creative ideologies, as well as historical and historical-comparative analysis. Results. An analysis of scholarly articles containing new studies related to the subject of research was conducted. Based on the obtained findings, Viktor Trotsenko is regarded as a proponent of incorporating elements of Ukrainian identity in the architecture of the 1920s, a student of the Kharkiv School of Architecture during its formative period, and an active figure during its flourishing stage. The development of Trotsenko’s personal principles of architectural creativity is defined as the transmission of professional mastery within the «master’s school» model, incorporating the concept of reflecting Ukrainian identity in architecture, which found its implementation in the work of small cultural groups in Kharkiv. Through the study of folk art, Viktor Trotsenko laid the foundations of his own synthetic creative thinking and developed his personal method of architectural formation of new designs based on folk prototypes. Scientific novelty. The research reveals the influence of the transmission of the idea of authentic Ukrainian architecture within the environment of ethnographers, artists, heritage specialists, and architects of the Kharkiv School of Architecture on the creative work of Viktor Trotsenko, a prominent representative of this direction in the 1920s. Practical relevance. The results can be applied in the educational process by incorporating them into lecture courses on the history of Ukrainian architecture, in theoretical research on the history of Ukrainian architecture in the first third of the 20th century, and in scientific and design work, including the documentation of historical and architectural monuments designed by Viktor Trotsenko.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20457 BIOMORPHIC AND PARAMETRIC ARCHITECTURE OF SHADE STRUCTURES 2025-11-04T11:34:15+02:00 Olena Gella Olena.Hella@kname.edu.ua Kateryna Didenko yekaterina.didenko@gmail.com Iryna Snitko Iryna.Snitko@kname.edu.ua Svitlana Makhonko Svitlana.Makhonko@kname.edu.ua Nataliа Plotnikova Nataliа.Plotnikova@kname.edu.ua
The article explores the combination of biomorphic and parametric architecture through the example of shade structures in public spaces. Over the past five years, the architectural community has witnessed annual changes in leading green standards aimed at incorporating credits for the visual qualities of the built environment. The primary goal of green certification systems is to encourage the design and construction of buildings that minimize environmental impact while creating a healthy human environment. Accordingly, accounting for the negative effects of architectural aesthetics on human perception is a logical and consistent step. Within the framework of the scientific topic «Environmental Certification Systems in Architecture» (State Registration No. 0123U101316), researchers at the O.M. Beketov National University of Urban Economy in Kharkiv have been developing a model for a national green building standard. At the same time, the university’s architectural school maintains a strong research focus on «Visual Ecology in Architecture». The synergy of these research directions enabled the authors to study how aesthetic attributes of architecture may be integrated into the national green standard. Methodology. This study applies content analysis to the documentation of international architectural environmental certification standards (BREEAM, LEED, WELL, DGNB) in order to identify criteria that directly or indirectly address aesthetic and visual aspects of the built environment. To deepen the results, elements of comparative analysis were also applied, allowing for a systematic comparison of the approaches used by various standards to incorporate visual parameters. The analysis covers all structural components of the certification systems (credits, criteria, etc.) that consider architectural visual qualities on different levels. Results. The study examines how aesthetic aspects are integrated into the crediting systems of four major international green building standards: BREEAM, LEED, WELL, and DGNB. Given the scope of the research, further analysis of other standards not included in this publication is planned in future works. Through indepth content analysis of the textual materials, the authors identified and critically examined the principles by which aesthetic values are incorporated into environmental rating systems. Scientific novelty. For the first time, a comprehensive study of leading international environmental certification systems is conducted with a focus on the visual aspects of architectural design. In contrast to previous studies that concentrate primarily on technical or energy-related metrics, this research uncovers hidden mechanisms for integrating aesthetic criteria into the environmental assessment process. Practical relevance. The outcomes of this study will serve as a foundation for the development of a Ukrainian national green certification standard that includes effective tools for managing both environmental and aesthetic performance of contemporary architecture.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20460 NOMADIC ARCHITECTURE AS A MODEL OF MOBILE SPACE IN THE CONTEXT OF POST-INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY 2025-11-04T11:52:30+02:00 Andrii Horchakov a.horchakov@gmail.com
The purpose of the article is to consider the phenomenon of nomadic lifestyle and its impact on the architectural environment in recent decades in the context of post-industrial society. To make a forecast of the development options for this phenomenon and possible methods of solution. Methods. To collect material, the author used a quantitative method to study statistical data. The qualitative method was used to observe changes in the environment and in the consciousness of the nomad. The comparative method was used to compare scientific material. Results. We have an old architectural structure designed for the society of the 20th century, where migrations have just begun to gain momentum and this structure is no longer suitable for the modern mobile lifestyle, it needs changes. Large cities have long been experiencing a crisis of internal and external migrations, starting with tourist and ending with labor. The structure of modern cities must respond more quickly to fleeting requests. The urban planning community must develop new mechanisms to meet the needs of millions of migrants. This migration phenomenon is caused not only by economic factors, but also by the fact that humanity has changed its perception of the world and attitude towards social ties. The scientific novelty of this article lies in the fact that it is written through the prism of the author’s personal experience of migration events and gives a unique perspective on this issue. This is also a rapidly changing phenomenon, new factors appear every month and the view on the problem that existed a year ago has already changed. The practical significance of this study is now precisely at the right time due to problems with migrants, structural changes in lifestyle due to the pandemic, climate change, war, etc. These issues should be addressed in an applied way. In conclusion, we have a forecast of further growth in migration and emerging issues for correct reflection on this trend.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20461 ARCHITECTURAL AND URBAN PLANNING ASPECTS OF THE «SMART CITY» CONCEPT IN MODERN MINDS 2025-11-04T12:02:22+02:00 Iryna Dreval Iryna.Dreval@kname.edu.ua Tetyana Zhydkova tavlz@ukr.net
The study focuses on identifying the architectural and urban planning aspects of the «smart city» concept in the context of current conditions. The results of determining the bearing capacity and calculating the stress–strain state of rigid airfield pavements were obtained. Based on the performed calculations, constructive solutions and proposals for the restoration of rigid airfield pavements are provided. Isolines of vertical displacements, bending moments, and shear forces in rigid airfield pavement slabs under the load of the An-225 aircraft were obtained. The values of the classification parameters (PCR) of rigid airfield pavements were determined. A set of numerical experimental studies made it possible to solve the scientific problem of assessing the stress–strain state of rigid airfield pavement structures, taking into account the spatial load of aircraft. The purpose of the study is to determine the bearing capacity and investigate the stress–strain state of rigid airfield pavement structures considering real spatial loads and soil foundation properties, on the basis of which constructive proposals and engineering solutions for airfield pavements are provided. Methodology. The research methods include literature review, the ACR–PCR classification parameter method, and the finite element method. Results. Calculations of rigid airfield pavement structures under the load of the heavy An-225 aircraft were performed. Numerical experiments using the finite element method and the ACR–PCR method made it possible to determine the bearing capacity of the pavement and assess its stress–strain state. The calculations showed that the existing runway structure of Hostomel International Airport does not ensure the operation of the An-225 even with minimal take-off intensity. The need to increase the thickness of the upper layer of cement concrete pavement to 350–391 mm depending on the number of take-offs was established. The proposed constructive solutions are aimed at improving the strength and durability of airfield pavements, taking into account real spatial loads and soil foundation properties. Scientific novelty. The scientific novelty lies in the implementation of a fundamentally new approach to the study of the stress–strain state of rigid airfield pavements based on the finite element method, considering real spatial loads and the influence of soil foundations. Practical relevance. The practical significance of the work lies in the possibility of applying the results of stress–strain calculations of rigid airfield pavement structures under real spatial aircraft loads in the design and construction of airfield elements.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20463 ARCHITECTURAL ENVIRONMENT AS A SOURCE AND A MEANS OF PROTECTION AGAINST SOCIAL FEARS AND ANXIETY 2025-11-04T12:14:42+02:00 Anton Zinchenko anton.zinchenko@kname.edu.ua
The modern urban environment has a significant impact on the psycho-emotional state of a person. Architecture not only performs utilitarian functions, but also forms a sense of security, comfort or, conversely, anxiety and alienation. Visual perception of space can activate social fears – persistent negative emotions associated with the negative impact of the architectural environment on a person. This article examines how elements of the architectural environment can provoke or intensify such fears, as well as possible ways to minimize them. Purpose. Analysis and systematization of visual signs of danger of the architectural environment that provoke social fears. Methodology. One of the most important tools for studying architectural form, the informative qualities of which are revealed only in the process of perception, is experimental psychology. There is a close connection and correlation between it and the architectural composition. The methods used in the study are dedicated to the socalled «operator» level of visual perception, in which elements, semantic and logical units that can have symbolic expression work. Results. Social fears provoked by the architectural environment are a form of anxiety associated with being in public places, interacting with other people or feeling vulnerable in the urban environment. They can manifest themselves in the following forms: fear of crowds (demophobia), fear of open (agoraphobia) or closed (claustrophobia) spaces, anxiety due to the lack of social security (vandalism, signs of criminogenicity), discomfort from potential aggression from the environment. Scientific novelty. It consists in revealing the role of the visual properties of architecture as a provocateur of social fears and anxiety states, as well as potential opportunities for architectural composition as a protector against them. Practical relevance. The architectural environment can both intensify and mitigate social fears. The obtained data expand the understanding of the visual properties of the architectural environment and can be used both in architectural environment design practices and in pedagogy.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20464 CLASSIFICATION AND TYPOLOGY OF PHYSICAL AND SPORTS COMPLEXES: AN ARCHITECTURAL-PLANNING INSTRUMENT 2025-11-04T12:21:22+02:00 Serhii Kovalchuk serhiikovalchuk.arq@gmail.com
The uneven spatial distribution of physical and sports complexes in urban residential districts highlights the need for a systematic approach to their organization. The purpose of this work is a comprehensive analysis and systematization of scientific data on the influence of key parameters of modifying heavyweight structural concrete with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on its mechanical characteristics. The work aims to summarize previous research on this issue and identify key patterns for the most common type of concrete in construction. Methodology. The research is based on methods of theoretical analysis and generalization of the results of 22 experimental works. The influence of parameters such as the type, form, and geometric dimensions of CNTs, their concentration in the cement matrix, dispersion methods, as well as the effect of the water-cement ratio and chemical additives on the effectiveness of the modification, were analyzed. Results. It has been established that the effectiveness of modification is a multifactorial process. An analysis of the results of testing batches of modified concrete samples for compression and tension was performed. It was determined that the optimal concentration of CNTs, from the point of view of mechanical properties, is in the range of 0.05–0.15% by weight of cement, while exceeding it can lead to nanoparticle agglomeration and a decrease in strength. It is confirmed that the use of ultrasonic treatment in combination with polycarboxylate superplasticizers is one of the most effective methods for achieving uniform distribution of CNTs. It was determined that short (< 10 μm) and long (≥ 10 μm) nanotubes have different effects on strength: long ones can be more effective for compressive strength, while short ones are for tensile strength. Scientific novelty. Unlike existing reviews that analyze the impact of nanotube modification on various types of cementitious composites, the scientific novelty of this work lies in the targeted analysis and systematization of data exclusively for heavyweight structural concrete. This focused approach allowed for the identification of patterns specific to this material, clarification of the optimal concentration ranges for CNTs, and establishment of a hierarchy of influencing key parameters. Practical relevance. The results of the work are useful for research in the field of building materials science. The relevance of the study is due to the need to create an educational space that supports the psycho-emotional health of students, reduces the level of mental fatigue and helps to increase academic motivation. Purpose. The purpose of the study is to develop a structured functional-spatial model of the university environment with the integration of psychological, environmental, architectural and educational components. Methodology. The methodological basis is the analysis of literary sources, the layout of the structural blocks of the paradigm of spatial development of HEIs, as well as a comparative study of examples of architecture of Ukrainian universities. Results. The result is the creation of a model of functional-planning organization of university campuses based on ART, which takes into account four key components: “being apart”, “expansion”, “attractiveness” and “adaptability”. Structural and instrumental solutions for the implementation of ART in the practice of spatial planning of higher education in Ukraine are proposed. The concept of applying Attention Restoration Theory (ART) in the architectural and planning organization of university campuses is based on the idea that university space should not only provide the functional needs of the educational process, but also be an environment of mental restoration, stimulation of natural attention, and reduction of anxiety. The basis of the concept is the integration of the provisions of Attention Restoration Theory (ART) in the architectural and planning organization of university campuses in accordance with the principles of sustainable development, ergonomics, a biophilic approach, and pedagogical efficiency. ART offers the concept of university space not only as infrastructure, but as an environment that supports mental well-being, reduces fatigue, and stimulates learning motivation. The results can be used in the development of architectural concepts for the development of university campuses and strategies for the development of HEIs. Scientific novelty. The influence of Attention Restoration Theory (ART) on the formation of university architecture has been studied. Practical relevance. The results of the study can be used in the diploma design of architectural complexes of universities, in architectural and design activities.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20469 VERNACULAR BUILDING TRADITIONS IN CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE OF CHINA 2025-11-04T12:57:04+02:00 Anna Martynenko annamartinenko2012@gmail.com Natalya Novak nata1nova1@gmail.com
Purpose. The purpose of the article is to identify and analyze the ways of transmitting vernacular architecture in contemporary Chinese architecture. Special attention is paid to the comprehension of traditional heritage through the modern design strategies of leading Chinese architects. Methodology. The study applies a qualitative method of analyzing case studies of completed architectural projects that integrate vernacular principles into contemporary practice. The main analytical tool is the typology of transmission channels of tradition – object-morphological, symbolic-metaphorical, and contextual – which allows for a comprehensive assessment of the interaction between tradition and innovation. The analysis is conducted on the example of implemented projects by Wang Shu, Zhu Pei, and the architectural bureau Oneartharch architect. Results. It was revealed that contemporary Chinese architecture integrates elements of vernacular building not only at a formal level but also through philosophical, ecological, and cultural strategies. Wang Shu’s projects demonstrate object- morphological and contextual transmission channels: the use of recycled traditional materials, local constructions, and adaptation to the climate. Zhu Pei’s works reflect a symbolic-metaphorical approach and the reproduction of cultural memory through form and space. The architects of Oneartharch work primarily within contextual and processual channels: they focus on the experience of presence, local crafts, and community participation in construction. All three approaches form an architecture that combines tradition and innovation. Scientific novelty. For the first time, a comprehensive analysis of the transmission of vernacular tradition in contemporary Chinese architecture is carried out through five analytical channels. The potential of interaction between local heritage and modern design is revealed. Practical relevance. The materials can be used in the educational process and in the design of architecture based on the principles of sustainable development, adaptability, and cultural continuity. The experience of China is valuable for countries that seek to reinterpret their traditional architecture in a contemporary context.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20470 BUILDING TYPOLOGY OF THE BUCHAN DISTRICT: MORPHOLOGICAL, FUNCTIONAL AND TEMPORAL ANALYSIS 2025-11-04T14:07:19+02:00 Hryhorii Melnychuk melnychuk.gv@gmail.com Oktyabrina Chemakina oktyabrina11@ukr.net Anton Kuzmin kuzminaolmrfox@gmail.com Liliia Gnatiuk liliia.hnatiuk@npp.kai.edu.ua
Purpose. The purpose of the study is to identify the typological structure of development in the Bucha district as a foundation for strategic spatial planning, zoning, post-war recovery, and revitalization. Methodology. The methodology combines morphological, functional, and chronological analysis with comparative typological assessment, spatial-statistical synthesis, cartographic zoning, and pilot elements of built environment passportization. As a result, six dominant morphotypes of development are defined, reflecting the spatial differentiation of the district-from traditional rural to post-war chaotic patterns. A functional typology is proposed (agro-residential, recreational-residential, industrial-urban, transit-service, and suburban), along with a chronological stratification of urban fabric. Scientific novelty of the research: for the first time, an integrated typological model of the built environment in the Bucha district has been proposed, combining morphological, functional, and chronological parameters into a unified analytical system. A typological matrix has been developed, encompassing six morphotypes of development, five functional territorial types, and six temporal layers of transformation, enabling a comprehensive characterization of the district’s architectural and spatial structure. The study substantiates the application of typological analysis as an interdisciplinary tool that combines urban planning, sociocultural, historical-geographical, and security components in the formulation of local sustainable development policies. The theoretical value of the research lies in constructing a typological matrix that enables identification of transformation scenarios and integrates historical- morphological knowledge with the imperatives of safety, sustainability, and regional identity. Practical relevance include the application of this typological approach in developing detailed territorial plans, revitalization strategies, and frameworks for post-war urban policy. The proposed method supports spatial integrity, infrastructural modernization, and the preservation of identity, while ensuring functional adaptability and long-term resilience. It offers a basis for systematic spatial passportization of sustainable community structures at the local level.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20471 PRINCIPLES OF RESTORATION OF SMALL RIVERS IN UKRAINIAN CITIES (ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE LYBID RIVER IN KYIV) 2025-11-04T14:15:05+02:00 Olena Oliynyk olena.oliinyk@naoma.edu.ua Davyd Akopian david.akopyan@naoma.edu.ua
Purpose. The aim of the study is to critically reconsider the approaches to the reconstruction of architectural heritage in Ukraine – through the analysis of the legal framework, professional debates, contemporary challenges of post-war recovery, and the manipulative use of reconstruction as a tool of simulation in heritage practices. Methodology. The research is based on a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach that includes legal analysis and historical-discursive reconstruction. It applies methods of comparative analysis, content analysis of publications, and case analysis of implemented reconstruction projects. To explore the intangible aspects of heritage, elements of hermeneutic analysis are used, enabling the interpretation of value meanings and sociocultural narratives embedded in reconstruction approaches. Results. The current legal framework is shown to focus primarily on formal procedures, overlooking the humanitarian dimensions of heritage — such as authenticity, symbolic value, and community participation. Terminology remains vague, and the concept of re-creation lacks a clear methodological foundation. In the context of post-war recovery, this leads to deep gaps between law, professional expertise, and public expectations. Additionally, a growing tendency is observed: reconstruction is increasingly used to legitimize simulated solutions that substitute meaningful heritage engagement. Scientific novelty. The scientific contribution of the study lies in the conceptual reframing of architectural heritage re-creation as a complex interdisciplinary process that integrates technical, legal, methodological, and humanitarian dimensions. Practical relevance. Its practical significance is realized through the identification of key contradictions in current legal and design practices, as well as through the development of approaches to fragmented intervention practices, recognition of simulation strategies, and formation of participatory scenarios that may inform post-war recovery policy.
2025-10-30T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://jrnl.nau.edu.ua/index.php/Design/article/view/20477 DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION OF ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION: THEORY, METHODOLOGY, MODELS 2025-11-04T14:52:43+02:00 Liudmyla Shvets Liudmyla.Shvets@kname.edu.ua Anna Korovkina annkorovkina11@gmail.com
Purpose.
